About the Award

The Rick Starr Award for Human-Centered Sports Journalism is a new, annual award given to a student at Penn State’s Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications who exemplifies Rick’s approach to sports writing — emphasizing the human impact of sports and the human struggles of the athletes. Faculty at the college select the students to receive the award. Visit here to read Penn State’s announcement and feature article about the award.

Rick’s long-time friends Bob and Cathy Buday established the award in 2019 and have pledged to support it for at least 10 years. Through donations from Rick’s many friends, family members and former coworkers, we hope to keep it going longer and reach more deserving students.
